What it is
A water-based crackle medium used between two layers of paint. It creates fine, antique-style surface cracks. This is a single-step crackle system—no primer or second component needed.
How to use it
- Paint your base color (this is the color that will show through the cracks). Let it dry completely.
- Brush on the crackle medium—apply in one even layer. Don’t overwork it. Let it dry fully.
- Paint your top coat (a different color for contrast) over the dried crackle medium.
- Cracks will begin forming as the top layer dries.
- Once dry, cracks will appear. You can enhance them with antique paste, wax, or glaze if desired.
When to use it
- To give paint layers a vintage or shabby-chic look
- Smaller or more delicate projects where raised texture isn’t needed
Pro Tips
- Always use contrasting paint colors for crack visibility.
- Thicker medium = larger cracks; thinner medium = smaller cracks.
- Avoid metallic topcoats—they won’t crack well.
- Don’t overwork the crackle medium.
- Let dry naturally—no heat tools.
- Brushing direction matters! Cracks will go the way the second layer of paint is brushed on, you can vary your brush strokes for a more natural looking crackle.
- You can add water to make thin cracks.
- Vary the thickness of application for a more natural look.
